What Happens During a Whitening Treatment?

A whitening treatment at our office will leave you with a smile up to eight shades whiter than what you had before your appointment. Depending on your case, your treatment could take 45 minutes to an hour.

Before applying the bleaching substance to your teeth, we will cover your gums with a protective agent and keep your lips out of the way with a lip retractor. We’ll then use a special light to activate the whitening substance so it can penetrate the pores of your teeth and work its magic.

Generally, it may take about three applications for patients to see noticeable results.

Common Reasons for Tooth Discoloration

People can experience staining and discoloration on their teeth for multiple reasons. If the stains are on the surface, whitening can give you a much more noticeable outcome. Unfortunately, internal staining from trauma may not provide you with the dramatic results you desire.

Below are a few of the common reasons people’s teeth can become discolored:

  • Consuming staining foods or beverages
  • Tobacco use
  • Taking certain medications
  • Aging

Maintaining Your Results

You’ll want to do what you can to maintain your results. To do so, make sure to keep up with good oral hygiene habits. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. You’ll also want to limit beverages, such as tea, red wine, and coffee, as these can cause surface stains.

Finally, be sure to visit the dentist for your routine checkup and cleaning!
