Tooth Extraction

We know not everyone looks forward to getting a tooth extraction. If your dental complications lead to you needing one, we will make sure you’re as comfortable as possible during the procedure.

Why Do We Extract Teeth?

Pulling teeth is generally a last resort. Dentists perform extractions if you have a tooth that’s damaged beyond repair or could impact the rest of your teeth and overall health. Some reasons we may need to remove a tooth include:

  • Extensive tooth decay
  • Tooth infection
  • Crowding
  • Trauma or injury
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

Types of Extractions

Extractions are relatively quick procedures, and we use anesthesia to reduce pain and anxiety. Depending on your situation, we can perform one of two types of extractions.

A simple extraction involves removing what’s visible in your mouth. During this procedure, your dentist will numb the surrounding tissues and loosen the tooth with a special instrument called an elevator. Finally, they’ll remove the tooth with dental forceps.

A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure that involves removing the tooth from below the gum line. After numbing the gum tissue around the affected tooth, we will create an incision to access and remove the underlying tooth. People may need a surgical extraction to address a tooth that has broken off at the gum line or has not yet erupted.

Recovering from a Tooth Extraction

After your tooth extraction, you may experience some swelling and pain as the anesthesia wears off. It’s important not to disturb the extraction site and keep it clean to prevent an infection or prolong the healing process. Bite down gently on some dry and sterile gauze to minimize bleeding. Avoid smoking, hard food, and drinking through a straw during the healing process.

By resting and taking care of yourself, your gums should heal after a few days and fully recover after about two weeks.
