What is a Root Canal Procedure?

A root canal treatment removes the infected nerve from the tooth, including any infected tooth structure. Despite many people's fear, it should not hurt to have this procedure completed. In fact, root canals actually eliminate pain for the most part. Our team performs this treatment while you have local anesthesia and sometimes nitrous oxide to help keep you relaxed.

What Happens During Treatment?

During the treatment, your dentist will first drill an access hole at the top of the affected tooth. This will allow them to remove the infected tooth pulp and thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth chamber. Afterward, they will fill the area with a temporary filling to close the area.

Your tooth can still survive without its nerve, but scheduling an additional appointment to place a crown over the treated tooth is recommended. This will provide some extra protection for it.

Preventing the Need for a Root Canal

There’s a lot you can do to prevent the need for a root canal treatment! Doing everything to keep your teeth as healthy as possible can fend off infections that can worsen and cause you pain. Some practices you want to start including are:

  • Wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth if recommended
  • Brush and floss daily
  • Use fluoride
  • Limit sugar
  • Visit the dentist regularly
