What is Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or periodontitis, is a gum infection that can be severe. It comes in four stages – gingivitis being the mildest form and advanced periodontitis being one of the most severe forms. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to several complications with your oral and overall health.

Common symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive gums
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Receding gumline
  • Gum sensitivity

Treating Gum Disease

Treating gum disease quickly is crucial to prevent tooth loss and other serious health concerns. The earlier we catch it, the easier it will be to treat. Procedures during its minor stages include a deep cleaning of the gumline and some medications if necessary.

Advanced periodontal disease could require surgery to remove the unhealthy tissue.

Preventing Gum Disease

Even though gum disease is common, it’s very easy to prevent. Simply taking care of your teeth and oral hygiene can reduce your chances of developing it. If you want to fend off gum disease, follow some of these helpful tips:

  • Regular dental checkups
  • Brushing and flossing daily
  • Limiting sugar
  • Avoiding tobacco
