Scaling and root planing is a common service performed to help treat gum disease. It’s much more in-depth than your traditional dental cleaning and can help restore your oral and overall health.
If we notice any signs of chronic periodontal disease, we may recommend scaling and root planing. It occurs when your gums pull away from your teeth due to the bacteria in plaque. If left untreated, it can cause large pockets to grow between your teeth and gums, allowing more bacteria to grow in areas that regular brushing cannot reach.
Scaling and root planing can get to those areas and protect your oral health.
Depending on your case, you may need to schedule more than one appointment to see positive results. Anesthesia is available if you’re concerned about pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Scaling and root planing involve using special tools to remove plaque from your teeth and root surfaces. Once that's finished, your dental hygienist will use a scaling tool to smoothen the roots and help your gums reattach to your teeth.
The benefits of this treatment are as follows:
You may experience tooth sensitivity for up to a week after your scaling and root planing treatment. It’s also normal for your gums to be swollen and tender; however, you should still be able to resume normal oral care afterward.
If needed, you can schedule regular periodontal cleanings every three to four months.
